How Memento helps you
use your phone with
intention

Most of us reach for our phones on autopilot and surface an hour (or two) later. Memento is an AI coach that steps in the moment you reach, asks why, and helps you swap automatic scrolling for a deliberate choice. Here's how it works.

COACH

What are you looking for in this moment?

Type, tap, or say it…

What happens in the moment

You open one of your problem apps. Your coach appears and asks what you're looking for. What happens next depends on your answer.

When you've got a real need, you get the time you need

Say you open Chrome to pull up the address for dinner, or to check the weather before you head out. You tell the coach, it sees a genuine, in-the-moment need, and it gets out of your way. No friction, no lecture.

COACH

What are you looking for in this moment?

I need to grab the address for dinner.

Five minutes.

Tap done once you've got the address.

Open Chrome Done

When the time's up, it checks back: wrap up, or make your case for a few more minutes.

When it's a trigger, that's when the coaching happens

Now say you open Instagram because you're bored, restless, or you just want to kill ten minutes before the next thing. Be honest about it and this time your coach talks you through the moment: it reflects the reason back and offers something better to reach for.

Honestly? I'm just bored.

COACH

Bored is real. Last time, you wanted to read a few pages instead. Want to try that, or take five minutes here?

TRY FIRST
Read a few pages 5 minutes here

Either way, you're the one deciding, and nothing here makes you feel like you got caught.

It gets to know your patterns

There are moments when you reach for your phone without thinking. You name yours and pick what you'd rather do instead. Next time one comes, the better option is already there.

The morning. Take a walk outside.
At night. Read a few pages.
Bored. Five minutes of your favorite hobby.
Stressed. Two minutes of box breathing.
Avoiding something. Say what the hard thing is.

Coaching foundations

The coaching is built on two methods from counseling and therapy, each with decades of clinical research behind them:

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING

A counseling method developed in the 1980s and studied ever since, built around a person's own motivation to change. The coach asks instead of orders, so the reason to stop is your own.

CBT

Cognitive behavioral therapy, the most researched form of talk therapy. It works on unhelpful patterns of thought and behavior. The coach uses this to help you stop acting on autopilot.

You set the rules

Memento only coaches where you ask it to. You decide which apps, which hours, and how firm. Group the apps that get you into Blocksets, pick Balanced for a light touch or Firm for a harder line, and set the time windows that matter.

It works even offline

Lost signal on the train or a flight? A built-in fallback coach keeps going, so the pause still happens when you need it.

Time you actually chose.

That's the whole idea. A coach in the moment, smart enough to tell a real reason from a trigger.
